Eating Habits of a Toddler...

Bert, tucking into an ice cream!

Bert is now 2 years and 3 months old - he's growing into a super cheeky lad who makes us smile every single day. He loves to make animal noises, jump around like a frog, sing and dance. He's a very happy chap and is extremely loving. He loves dinosaurs, small animal figures, and soft toys, as well as all types of transport toys. He is obsessed with Peppa Pig, Bing Bunny and so many Disney films I can't name them all, every day with Bert is filled with so much happiness.

On the whole, he is a good eater - he likes many foods and is slowly getting better at trying new foods - we try not to stress too much and believe his eating habits will naturally continue to improve and his tastebuds broaden as he ages.

Sometimes though, mealtimes can be frustrating - to cook a meal that he refuses to touch, or to witness the tears (drama queen!) when we ask him to try something new wears very thin after a while, and Liam and I sometimes struggle to keep our cool. We love our food and hate waste, so it can be really hard to embark on a battle of wills with a stubborn toddler, especially after a long day.

I always vowed I'd never be the type of parent that cooks a different evening meal for their children - but more often than not Bert does eat a different dinner to the one Liam and I eat. I want to see he is full/nourished and don't want to keep serving up meals that he won't touch, but Liam and I are adventurous eaters and we don't want to give up our exciting evening meals either. So I tend to cook Bert's dinner early at around 6pm, followed by the adult meal later in the evening usually around 7pm.

Bert is a snacky eater, he loves platters and finger food, lots of choice, so we tend to serve him meals like this while we eat the more conventional hot dinners. Part of me thinks this is down to his fierce independence - he gets frustrated when he can't manoeuvre his cutlery perfectly, so finger foods provide him with far less stress. Saying that, we do ensure he has cutlery with his evening meal and we encourage him to use it. He can stab with a fork, spoon a yoghurt and has even begun being able to cut with a knife...this doesn't always result in him eating the food on the end of cutlery though - it is more food-exploration that ingestion. I usually try to give Bert a taste of elements of the grown up dinner, in the hope that I will discover something new he likes, and to slowly introduce new flavours to him.

That being said, I think that sometimes his eating choices are very much determined by his stubborn mind rather than picky taste-buds, it absolutely depends on what mood he's in and how you approach the meal time as to whether or not he will co-operate and eat the food that's offered.

Bert's favourite sort of meals...

We have a rule that he has to try at least one mouthful of everything that is on his plate at dinner time, sometimes it can lead to a battle of wills, but we're hoping that this rule will lead to him developing his tastes (you have to taste something multiple times to know whether you like it or not, apparently). We always give him some sort of vegetable with his hot dinners...pretty much 100% in vain, as he doesn't seem to have gotten the taste for his veggies yet. He calls all vegetables 'cabbage' and although we insist he tries a mouthful (peas, sweetcorn, green beans etc...) this is usually met with quite a battle and a fair amount of gagging on his part (bless him!).

The sort of drama we encounter when he doesn't like something...

In terms of the amount Bert eats, this can vary hugely day to day - sometimes I genuinely cannot seem to fill him up - he's even been known to eat 3 bananas for breakfast, no joke! On other days he grazes eating little and often and doesn't seem as enthused by the food he's offered.

Breakfast and lunch are very easy meals to feed Bert - he loves fruit, yoghurt, toast, spreads, cornflakes and milk - so combinations of these always make for a harmonious breakfast. Lunch, much the same is very easy - cold snacky platters full of fruit, sandwiches and snack foods are a winner. It is the evening meal times where I am running out of ideas and enthusiasm...I need some inspiration of dinners I can try with him. At the moment we're stuck in a rut preparing the same largely processed foods because we know he'll eat them happily and clear his plate - but I know they're not ideal dinners (think chicken nuggets/sausage with oven chips and peas/sweetcorn) and I want him to have healthy eating habits, not unhealthy ones like I did as a child.

Today I wanted to share some of his culinary likes/dislikes...I'd love to know what your toddlers eating habits are like - do they have any funny habits or strong dislikes? Do they eat the same meal as you each evening, or do you prepare them something different?

We will push on and keep encouraging him to try new foods and re-try old foods he still hasn't got the taste for. We will continue to lead by example, eating a varied and interesting diet, offering him the foods we eat, as well as ones we know he loves. I hope by seeing us eating a healthy, balanced diet this will encourage Bert to become braver with food.

Liam and I talk a fair amount about food, it is a bit of a hobby...we also watch cooking shows and like to eat out in restaurants with Bert - we hope that all of this combined will help add to Bert's culinary education. In fact, we even read books about food - only last week we were bought the most wonderful book for Bert by my lovely friend Emma called '1000 Things To Eat' by Usborne - a beautifully illustrated book full of pages and pages of every food stuff you could think of. Bert already loves going through the pages and naming all the food he already knows and hopefully it will help to introduce him to new foods as well.

Here are some snaps of the adult meals we get Bert to try tastes of...

One day we live in hope that Bert might eat his vegetables! #toddlerlife

I'd love to hear all about your toddlers eating habits....

WIN Peter Rabbit's Christmas Tale on DVD

Today on the blog I'm bringing you a chance to win a fab little stocking filler for your little ones...a brand new DVD from Abbey Home Media in time for Christmas.

Join Peter Rabbit and his friends on some wonderful Christmas adventures...

In this enchanting new collection Peter and his loyal companions Benjamin Bunny and Lilly Bobtail embark on fun adventures and wintry escapades.

The DVD features the following collection of eight delightful stories:-

Peter Rabbit’s Christmas Tale - When Mr. Bouncer gets too sick to make the important holiday supply delivery, Peter and Benjamin take it upon themselves to brave a blizzard (and Mr. Tod) to get the job done and meet a new friend along the way.

The Tale of the Uninvited Badger - When Tommy Brock decides he's had enough of the cold, he takes shelter by the fire inside the Bouncer's Burrow. It's up to Peter and his friends to devise a way of getting the grumpy badger out and to make sure he doesn't come back!

The Tale of the Runaway Rabbit - Peter is left to babysit Cotton-tail but can't resist an exciting event at the Squirrel camp. He brings his sleeping sister along but soon must rescue her when she wakes up and crawls away

The Tale of the Stolen Firewood - When Peter, Lily and Benjamin go out to collect firewood, they soon find that not one but three predators are after some too. Can the rabbits stage a series of daring raids to retrieve it?

The Tale of the Grumpy Owl - When Old Brown takes Peter's Journal, Peter must choose between saving his most precious possession and saving a friend.

The Tale of the Lucky Four-Leaf Clover - When Benjamin finds a four-leaf clover, Peter tricks him into thinking it brings good luck. It's harmless fun until Peter's prank accidentally leads Lily into Mr. Tod's dangerous clutches!

The Tale of the Big Move - When Lily's father decides to move the family out of the Lake District, Peter comes up with a clever, but dangerous, plan to change Dr. Bobtail's mind.

The Tale of the Greedy Fox - When Peter tells an impulsive lie, which leads Jemima Puddle-Duck into Mr. Tod's clutches, he must act fast to stop her from becoming the fox's dinner!

Bert absolutely loves Peter "Raddit" (bless him!) and I'm pretty sure your little one will love this cheeky bunny and his escapades too!

Rita Skeeter, chocolate frogs and afternoon tea at The Dorchester...

There's a title I never thought I'd write! Ha!

It's a grey and drizzly Monday here in Bedford - I have a 'to do' list as long as my arm, a house full of washing and dirty dishes and I'm so tired that I think I'll need to be fuelled by coffee and biscuits...but it is all worth it, as I filled my weekend with wonderful things.

This weekend was the last two days my twin sister Jo was spending with us, after staying with us for all of the half term holiday - so we decided to head out on Saturday to our local city Milton Keynes. We started our Christmas shopping, had a gorgeous lunch together at Byron Burger and we even managed to fit in meeting the real Bing and Flop (from Bert's favourite childrens TV show Bing Bunny). Of course, Bert was petrified of them and waved 'bye bye' as soon as he clapped eyes on them: but it was an 'experience' for him, and he chatted about it later, so although overwhelming at the time, I'm pretty sure he isn't traumatised by it.

Meeting the real Bing & Flop in Milton Keynes.

Saturday night (Halloween) saw hubby and I head out to our friend Liz and Baz's house for their epic annual Halloween fancy dress party. This year it had a Harry Potter theme (my favourite!!) and I was so excited to get dressed up.

I decided to dress up as the evil blonde bombshell Rita Skeeter (the journalist from The Daily Prophet in Harry Potter) and I put together my own costume by finding bits and pieces on eBay. I was well chuffed with the results:

Excuse the GIANT basket of washing in the background...it literally still looks like that...note to self...must do some washing today! Ha!

It was so hilarious being blonde for the night.

I come from a family of natural blondes - I always joke that I must be the milkman's - my natural dark brown/auburn hair has always been my point of difference in relation to the rest of my family, so I couldn't resist a photo alongside my naturally blonde twin sister - for comparisons sake...

Finally, two blonde twins!

Hubby put hours of effort into crafting his own costume from scratch - he went as Fawkes the Phoenix...all his handwork paid off to, as he won the 'best costume' prize which was a broomstick made from mini rolls *amazing*

Fawkes the Phoenix!

Look how happy he was with his prize!

The party was so much fun, our fab friends were amazing hosts as always and Liz had literally thought of everything from a Harry Potter themed menu to brilliant decorations!

We enjoyed homemade Butterbeer and hot buttered rum to drink, followed by mini pumpkin soups, onion Quidditch rings, cheese hufflepuffs, gillyweed jelly, golden snitches, pumpkin cake, and chocolate frogs...what a menu!

Chocolate frogs, golden snitches, gillyweed jelly, butterbeer and cheese Hufflepuffs!

Liz and Baz totally went to town decorating the house with such clever nods to all things Harry Potter from letters to Hogwarts in the fireplace, to the entrance to Platform 9¾...

Hogwarts letters for everyone!

Hedwig!!!

Platform 9¾

The Chamber of Secrets has been opened!!!

Follow the spiders...

It is such fun to get a little silly and let your hair (wig!) down with good friends - making memories and collecting moments that we'll never forget.

After getting to bed after 2am on Saturday night - I awoke pretty sleepy on Sunday morning, but excited for another day of adventures. I headed to London for a grown up girlie day with my lovely cousin Vicky which involved lots of shopping, lots of nattering, lots of walking and of course lots of eating.

We even managed to squeeze in the most incredible afternoon tea at The Dorchester hotel - it was our first visit to the prestigious hotel and boy was it impressive. Helped by the fact that we got to hobnob with none other than Rod Stewart who was with his wife Penny and their two lovely boys! What fun - I do love a bit of celeb spotting!

The Dorchester

The most incredible real floral display at The Dorchester by the super talented in-house florist Philip Hammond. It smelt DIVINE!

My gorgeous cousin Vicky enjoying a pink champagne with her afternoon tea!

Food heaven at The Dorchester

Two happy girlies enjoying a catch up and recharging the batteries.

So, I might have a 'to do' list as long as my arm, and a washing mountain the size of Everest, but it was totally worth it. What good is working hard if you can play hard and enjoy #WonderfulWeekends?

#WonderfulWeekends Linky: November

Mrs Bishop & Sarah Kate Makes

Sarah and I return for our second #WonderfulWeekends Linky!

Thank you once again to everyone who linked up to our October linky - it was marvellous to read about all the wonderful things you've been filling your weekends with. If you missed last month's linky then you can read my roundup post here and Sarah's roundup post here. It was a truly brilliant start to our new project.

We'd love for fellow bloggers to join in with our November link-up...our aim is to create a list of lovely blog posts that describe the #WonderfulWeekends you all have. As champions of positivity and mindfulness, Sarah and I want to inject some extra-joy into our corners of the inter webs and it would be amazing if you could all spread-the-weekend-love too.

All you have to do is add a link to any posts you write this month about wonderful weekend activities - it might be a family day out, a delicious meal, a mums/dads 'day off', or might just be a lazy weekend in your pjs - as long as it is wonderful to you then it is wonderful to us too! It could be an image collage post of pictures from your weekend, or a full on written post, it could be a review of family day out - anything goes, whatever works for you!

Remember to add the #WonderfulWeekends blog badge to your post, and to use the hashtag on social media. If you have time we'd really appreciate it if you have a peek at some other posts in the linky too and comment with the #WonderfulWeekends hashtag.

So many #WonderfulWeekends - October Roundup

Last month saw my wonderful friend Sarah (Sarah Kate Makes) and I launch our first ever blogging linky: #WonderfulWeekends is a chance for bloggers from across the internet to share what makes their weekends wonderful...

I absolutely LOVED reading through everybody's entries and discovering the varied and exciting activities people manage to pack into their down time.

Our aim was to spread some weekend joy, encourage people to make the most of their weekends and help people reclaim that time - stepping away from chores and 'must do's' and instead enjoying quality family time, indulging in hobbies or simply taking some time out to properly recharge the batteries.

In October #WonderfulWeekends covered many miles and saw us bloggers visit some amazing places... from Cambridge to Liverpool, Somerset to York, London to Malaysia we travelled far and wide to discover all things wonderful.

I loved that this first attempt at our little linky has already begun to inspire me with lots of ideas for activities to fill our weekends with positivity and joy. Gorgeous Kara from Innocent Charms Chats took her little brood to a Pick Your Own farm and their day looked like so much fun - a return to nature, a lesson in where our food comes from and a mammoth baking session with the literal fruits of their labour to boot - it really looked like the most perfect family Sunday. It has definitely inspired me to research into local PYO farms here in Bedfordshire - Bert is fruit mad so I think he'd really enjoy it.

Awww what a cutie!! Picking apples on a Sunday (picture by Kara at Innocent Charms Chats)

Lovely Lizzie from Lizzie somerset headed on a weekend retreat with her fab hubby sans children to celebrate their anniversary - they had a dreamy stay at the fabulous Little Barwick House in Somerset.

Is there anything more perfect than breakfast in a gorgeous hotel, with a view into the rose garden? (Photo by Lizzie somerset)

Sharon from Elephants and Mangoes took us along on her wonderful picnic at Port Dickson beach in Malaysia - how idyllic to think about a picnic on a sandy beach with coconut trees...it is a million miles away from this grey and drizzly morning in Bedfordshire!!

My darling friend Vicki from Honest Mum shared some magical moments from her weekends, including a fun-filled trip to Liverpool with her husband and boys - I loved this picture of her smallest son Alexander after having had his face painted at a brand event: what a total cutie!

Batman visits Liverpool! (Photo by Vicki at Honest Mum)

Of course the best thing about #WonderfulWeekends is that they don't have to be full of elaborate trips and expensive activities - some of the happiest weekends are full of walks in the sunshine, lazy local lunches, a glass of wine and a natter with people we love...

My beautiful friend Leigh from Headspace Perspective shared a relaxed weekend mooching around her hometown with her husband Martin, enjoying each other and making the most of a sunny autumn day. I still have food envy when I see the amazing chocolate tart she ate for lunch - weekends can only be made more wonderful with the addition of cake in my opinion...

I think my favourite photo from October's #WonderfulWeekends was this amazing shot from Stephanie over at Our Cherry Tree whose family are Pearly Kings and Queens. The photo shows her Nan and children enjoying Harvest Festival celebrations in the heart of Covent Garden - what a corker of a picture to treasure forever...

I am so excited to see what November's linky will bring...please do join in if you can - we'd love to see how you spend your weekends!
