Baby-related rambling...

I have now officially been a mummy for 2 weeks and 4 days...so far it is amazing. I am, of course, totally smitten with my little man, and am throughly enjoying my new role as chief nappy-changer/rocker/feeder/face puller/washer/bather/burper. :-)

My Little Bert - so serious!

We are taking each day as it comes, and so far I think Liam and I are coping very well - we make a great team. We're sharing jobs as much as possible, and although Liam has had to go back to work already (boo at only 2 weeks leave - rubbish!) he's still helping out loads.

first family portrait

I've spent most of my time so far with lots of lovely visitors (41 visitors and counting....) and have had so much support. I'm yet to do a proper stint of 'going solo' with Albert - I've only done the odd day here and there up until now. Tomorrow, Liam will be at work and the start of Albert and I building our own daytime routine will begin. I'm excited, and nervous (it is normal to be nervous right?) ... I feel confident, but there's always a niggle in the back of my mind - will I be good enough at this? We'll learn together, Albert and I, and hopefully a few weeks down the line we'll be in the swing of it, and our routine will be becoming more familiar each day.

Bert in one of his flat caps - with a name like Bert he HAD to have a flat cap, right?

Everyone is asking how I'm coping with the sleep deprivation, and to be honest, so far, it really is okay. Yes, I'm not getting as much sleep as I used to - but by the end of the pregnancy I wasn't sleeping well anyway - and at least now I'm not getting up 6 times a night to wee! The 'routine' (I use that term loosely) that we seem to be in is giving Bert a late feed around 12-1am, then taking him up in his moses basket (which lives by my side of the bed) and then he tends to wake once in the night for a feed, and thats that - he's up between 7am-8am for his morning feed, and we've even been blessed with a few nights where he's slept right through for 6-7 hours. We've also had a couple of nights where he's only slept for 2-3 hours, but thats to be expected with a newborn. I am tired, but I'm happy, excited, exhilarated by this little bundle - when he screams I'm not mad, or frustrated, I'm worried, I want him to stop because it physically hurts me when he cries - I'm like 'no no no don't cry, lets fix this, what can i do?' then the guess work begins - hungry? wet? dirty? in pain? needs a cuddle? a rock? a wander round the house? And the time goes on like that basically. It is all a big blurry muddle of love, and excitement, and learning how to be a good mum.

The first week was pretty rough as I was in so much pain following the birth. During the pushing stage of the delivery - right at the end - I had a huge bleed, so I had to have a very quick emergency delivery with forceps which caused a big tear 'down there', followed by a lot more blood loss and a ton of stitches- and so afterwards it really really hurt - to move, to sit, to stand, to wee (it REALLY hurt to wee) and that pain only eased after attempting to rest, taking paracetemol & ibuprofen like it was going out of fashion, and just letting time heal the wound. Naively, I hadn't thought much about pain AFTER the delivery - I'd been concentrating so much on getting through labour that it hadn't occurred to me how hard and painful it might be afterwards too! I was so lucky to have my mum and twin sister staying with me, and Liam off work, they helped and supported me no end. I now feel a bit more normal, and like I am starting a fresh new chapter of my life - when you're in pain or ill you sort of feel 'in limbo', like the new chapter hasn't started yet. Now it has. Time to put the trauma of the birth behind me, and move on, swiftly.

(To read my husband's account of the labour/delivery of little Bert visit his blog at www.childmanchild.blogspot.co.uk ... it is so funny & heart warming. It's likely to make you cry with laughter, and with emotion...he said it all far better than I could, and for me it was really funny hearing his version of events!)

We've experienced a lot of 'firsts' in this past fortnight ... first nappy change of our boy, first feed, first bath, first meal out at a restaurant with bubba, first car ride, first walk in buggy, first shopping trip, taking Albert to his first party/disco, a first 'date' for mummy and daddy post-baby, first time of leaving Albert with babysitters (our best friends Danni & Charlie), the first time he wee'ed all over us during a nappy change....at one point he even managed to poo on my trousers and puke in his own ear simultaneously - clever kid huh? :-) Welcome to parenthood I hear your cry!

Bert after his first bath!

Bert with his first babysitters - the lovely Charlie...

...and Danni xx

I'm really excited about all the other 'firsts' we're yet to experience, and I just know the time is going to fly by, so I'm trying to savour every single moment, taking as many photographs and videos as I can so I can preserve every memory.

I've still not managed anything on the baking front - although I have now managed to cook some dinners, so that's an improvement on the first week..! Maybe I'll manage to get my bake on in week 3....its something to aim for any how.

Thats enough baby-related rambling for now....

Nexcare Product Review - Maternity Support Band, Postpartum Support and Cold/Hot Maternity Compress.

The people from 3M Direct recently sent me some of their Nexcare maternity products to try out - those of you who are regular readers will know that I have a slipped disc in my back, and because of that I found my pregnancy to be particularly painful. As bubba grew so did the pressure on my bottom disc! :-( So I couldn't turn down a chance to try some items that might help relieve that pressure a little.

The first product they sent me was a maternity support band - designed to ease discomfort in your back and abdomen during pregnancy (for 20 weeks onwards) by supporting your baby's weight.

The Nexcare products...

The support band was very easy to put on (velcro fastenings around the bottom and top of your bump) and I instantly felt the support it gave me, taking the pressure off my back, and taking some of Albie's considerable weight for me! The band was very easy to move around in, and comfortable to wear for long periods. I just wish I'd known about the product earlier, as I didn't start wearing it until 34 weeks; had I had this product pre-34 weeks I'd have definitely worn it daily to work - as being on my feet at work all day really did hot up the back pain!

maternity support band - under and over the bump - taking the pressure off

The band is invisible under clothes, and just makes moving around and being active during those final weeks of pregnancy a little easier. Especially if, like me, you have a pre-pregnancy back complaint.

invisible under clothes, and gives support to bottom of your back

The second product sent to me by Nexcare is perhaps my favourite of all - the ColdHot Maternity Compress, which is a set of two boob-shaped gel packs, which you can pop in the fridge, or heat up in warm water and place inside your bra to ease the breast pain and discomfort that comes with being pregnant / a new mum. These really do the trick and are far superior to cabbage leaves or frozen peas!
I'll spare you a picture of me using them though - I'm not that mean! ;-)

The ColdHot Maternity Compress complete with nipple holes ;-) these are seriously a must for any lady who is considering breast feeding - trust me!

The final product Nexcare sent me was the postpartum support - this is a stretchy band designed to wrap around your abdomen in the days/weeks after delivery to help provide gentle yet firm compression to support your muscles post-delivery. Again, I have also found this product supportive of my back, helping to take some of the strain, and keep my posture correct - everyone knows slouching causes back pain, and this band just gently reminds you to sit up straight and tighten your tummy muscles.

the postpartum support on a model much more pleasing to the eye than me post-delivery!

For those of you lovely readers out there who are expecting a little bundle of joy soon and who fancy giving some of the Nexcare maternity products a go, I have a lovely 20% off discount code for you to use on the 3MDirect website....

The Arrival of Baby Bishop

Mrs Bishop is pleased to announce the arrival of her gorgeous baby boy Albert Kenneth Bishop  - who was born on Thursday 22nd August 2013 at 1:32pm, just 4 days late. The little monkey didn't keep me waiting for too long, and arrived safe and sound (after a traumatic delivery) to the proudest of parents. We are totally smitten with the little fella, and have taken hundreds of photos of him already!

He is such a little character, and we cannot believe he is already a week and one day old! He's gotten into a lovely routine, and is a very chilled little man at the moment - long may it continue!!

I'd love to share with my readers some pictures from Albert's first week....he is already the most photographed baby ever!

So sorry about the lack of posts on the blog-front, but I've been a pretty busy lady! Not a lot of time for baking or banter I'm afraid.

I've even had to resort to shop-bought baked-goods for the constant lovely flow of visitors... I'm sure they'll all excuse my tardiness on the baking-front...I'll no doubt get a cake in the oven some time soon!

Bye for now

Awaiting Our Arrival...

So today I'm officially overdue.

40 weeks + 1 day and counting...

This is where the impatience kicks in & I realise that only 4% of babies arrive on their due date & although I've been focussing on this date for 9 months, I've now got to be prepared to be patient & wait for him to make his appearance.

I'm pretty nervous about the impending labour... I think that's totally normal...I'd be weird or naive if I wasn't worried. I'm trying hard not to have any strong or definite expectations as such, I just want to be open minded about the whole birth process.

What I'm hoping for....

•him to come naturally without an induction
•to stay at home for as much of the early stages of labour as possible
•to have an epidural to ensure no complications with my slipped disc during labour
•to have Liam and my mum there with me at the birth, and Liam's parents waiting nearby/outside!
•I want to try to preserve my energy and not waste it on screaming/swearing/shouting too much  ... Haha I know this is easier said than done & I'll prob laugh hysterically when I read this post-birth!
•to be able to breast feed my little one once he's arrived.

My birth "expectations"...

•am expecting a lot of pain!
•a lot of boredom/waiting/frustration
•to feel very hot & uncomfortable in the delivery suite (cue Magicool spray!)
•to be frightened but will try my hardest to stay calm, and focus on what is the best way to get bubba out!
•to be highly emotional & probably cry an awful lot!

Apart from that I think it's best to stay open minded & just see what happens. At the end of the day I just want my healthy bubba in my arms & to get on with the new challenge of being a mummy!

Liam is getting really excited too & I know he's going to make the most amazing daddy! He has recently started writing a very funny & heartwarming blog all about being a first-time daddy, and it's well worth a read - he is hilarious, honest & basically has the mental age of a 7 year old...check it out over at Child, Man Child

Here's some pictures of my developing bump over the past 40 weeks to leave you with...

wow....look how I've grown!

My due date bump!

from 8 weeks to 40 weeks ... what a change!

I wonder if the next time I post I'll have my baby in my arms? Or will I be writing some more overdue frustration posts before then?

Big bumpy hugs to all my lovely readers...

First Wedding Anniversary & a trip to a Buddies USA Diner

This time last year I was getting ready to marry Liam!

I cannot believe how fast a year has gone, and I cannot quite take in all that has happened in one short year. Our wedding day was absolutely magical, and I will never quite get over just what an amazing day it was - such happy memories!

Outside the farmhouse

my four gorgeous bridesmaids, and lovely hubby!

I treasure my wedding photos so much, and have regularly looked back at them over the last year to reminisce.

After the wedding Liam and I went through a really tough time when we lost our first baby due to a miscarriage at the end of our honeymoon, it was such a sad time for us. but ultimately made us stronger,  and made us fight harder for what we wanted, a baby.

And now, a year down the line our Little Mr is one week away from being due, and I look like a beached whale! Exciting times!

the beached whale look

We nervously anticipate the birth, and I have absolutely everything crossed that we soon get to meet a healthy little bouncing baby boy, and all our dreams come true.

One Year Anniversary

Everyone has been telling Liam and I to enjoy our 'last chance' to go out alone as a couple - encouraging us to go out to eat, go to the cinema etc before the baby is here and we will apparently have no social life, or sleep ever again! Lol. So, not one to turn down advice, we headed off last night for an anniversary celebration meal to a Buddies USA Diner in Northampton.

We had the place recommended to us by my lovely friend Liz, who knows that Liam and I love a fun night out, good hearty food, and are big fans of American food culture (think Man vs. Food). The diners are spread all round Northamptonshire, and boast a huge menu full of American-esque cuisine (burgers, waffles, donuts, fries, soda floats etc!)...this place is SO American you can even opt to have your burger served in a donut. Yes, a donut!

Liam and I arrived to the hustle and bustle of a true 'diner' atmosphere - the only thing that was missing according to Liam was that the waiting staff weren't on roller-skates!

I could literally only JUST fit into the booth with my very large bump, and had to sort of sit sideways for the duration - the booths certainly aren't made for American waist sizes (if you know what I mean!)

hubby gearing up for his feast

my 'please don't take a photo of me' face

Firstly, we ordered drinks - American-stylie!

a coke float for me :-)

and a coors light for Liam

Next, we studied the amazing menu at great length ... this is just a snippet of the hamburger menu...amaze...

After taking advice from Liz, a well-seasoned Buddies visitor, we decided to skip appetisers, and head straight for a burger and dessert. Liz recommended the medium size burger for me, and she was spot on - Liam went for a large, with loaded fries (he's far more Adam Richmond than me!)

There is so much choice it's overwhelming, but again after seeking advice about whats best we chose:

LIAM: The Large AMERICAN MAC Burger (loaded with Mac & Cheese), with cheese and bacon loaded fries and beans

LUCY: The Medium Donut burger (a burger loaded with cheese and bacon, served in a donut instead of a bun!) with fries and a corn cob.

Liam's FEAST

Lucy's FEAST

The food was insanely good - proper stodge! Haute cuisine is lovely - but sometimes you just really fancy a great big dirty burger, right? I loved having mine served in a donut - the bacon and cheese went really well with the sweetness from the donut (think bacon and maple syrup) and the beef burger was so juicy and meaty. I'm glad I stuck with plain fries instead of loaded, as I wouldn't have been able to eat any more.

Liam devoured his plate, and was more than happy with his choice - creamy mac & cheese, in a burger, with chips and more cheese with bacon - what more could any man ask for?

Believe it or not, after that we still had room for dessert - and I'm sooooo glad we did!

Liam's choice: The BIGGEST piece of Banoffee Pie I've EVER seen.

it was literally a quarter of a pie!

and the scrummiest hot Bourbon & Pecan pie for me, with Vanilla ice cream....words cannot tell you how scrumptious this was.

dessert heaven

We joked when we finished that at least if I went into labour that night I would have eaten the biggest carb-fueled energy-boost sugar-filled meal to give me the energy to get the baby out! :-)

I think the photos speak for themselves, but I honestly can't recommend Buddies enough - they are incredibly family friendly, with a full children's menu, fast, friendly and efficient service, and very good value for money - our total bill came to under £36 last night. We will definitely be returning - with Baby Bishop in tow - if for no other reason than to sample their extensive breakfast menu, and to try another awesome burger combo!

How do you celebrate your anniversaries?

Would Buddies be the top of your list?
