The Buyer’s Guide To Olive Oil from Jamie's Italian

The Buyer's Guide To Olive Oil from Jamie's Italian

As a child I'd never even HEARD of olive oil, let alone tasted it - then I went away to Greece in my early teens and I remember being given a giant basket of warm bread and bowls of olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip it in, and I thought it was the weirdest thing EVER! I wasn't keen on the first taste, but after a few dips I started to appreciate the flavour...the sweetness, fruitiness, the sharpness of the vinegar and then the warmth of the oil. From that point on it became my new foodie obsession.

Olive oil for dipping

All these years on and I'd be surprised if there's not a single house in the country that hasn't housed a bottle of olive oil at some point - for me, it's always in my basic kitchen larder. I use it to cook, roast, make dressings, make pesto ... it so so versatile, and very flavoursome.

But I've never really learnt that much about the different types of oil, where they come from, how they're made, and what sorts of flavours they produce...that's where this post steps in...

Good old Mr Jamie Oliver (he's one of my faves as I've said on many occasions) certainly knows his stuff when it comes to Mediterranean cooking and ingredients and his brilliant team over at Jamie's Italian have put together this really useful infographic called The Buyer’s Guide To Olive Oil, which covers all the basics when it comes to learning a bit more about olive oil and teaching you how to choose the right oil for you.

What's your favourite way to use olive oil?

I like to make a salad of ripe juicy heritage tomatoes, freshly picked basil from the garden, rip up a big, plump ball of mozzarella and then drizzle it liberally with my favourite Italian extra virgin olive oil.

PERFECTION.

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you'll know that I'm absolutely mad on the stationery, prints, textiles, books and homewares by talented artist/designer/illustrator Hannah Dale of Wrendale Designs. My kitchen is full to bursting with her stunning tinware (tea, coffee, sugar tins, biscuit tin, cracker tin) and I pretty much always have a Wrendale Wishlist as long as my arm...

Scarves by Wrendale Designs

The lovely folks at Wrendale very kindly gifted me their stunning Mustard Leaping Hare scarf (as they know mustard is my absolute favourite colour) and my goodness, am I chuffed with it! The photos don't do it justice, it's a really beautiful soft material, it flows and is as light as air - making it so comfortable to wear.

Gifts from Wrendale

I might have oo-ed and ahh-ed just a little bit when the parcels arrived, I mean can we just take a moment to look at how stunning the wrapping and gift bag is? I'm an absolute sucker for beautiful packaging and I think you can tell a lot about the quality of the product from the way it is wrapped.

Bert was so excited to see a parcel addressed to him which was wrapped in this amazing Zoology Double Sided Gift Wrap which features an orangutang, sloth, toucan and ladybird among tropical flowers, bamboo and palms on one side, and a gorgeous stripe on the other - very on trend right now and super cute!

I couldn't wait to open up the bag and present to see the goodies inside... as well as sending the scarf gift for me, they also sent a gift for the children in the form of Hannah's brand new children's book called 'Have You Heard?', needless to say my animal mad boy was rather chuffed with the new addition to his vast book collection (more on that later...)

I wore my scarf for the first time on Sunday when I met a friend for lunch in a local favourite restaurant. I teamed it with Navy Blue skinny chinos and a navy/white Breton stripe top. I loved the huge pop of colour it gave to my outfit and it was the perfect accessory for what felt like a very autumnal day!

I'm excited to pair it with other outfits of mine - I'm thinking that wearing it with my tweed Joules blazer may well become my go-to look this autumn/winter!

Have You Heard by Hannah Dale

As I mentioned earlier in the post, as well as sending the scarf the kind people at Wrendale HQ also sent over Hannah's latest children's book called 'Have You Heard?'. You might remember that we've enjoyed Hannah's children's books before, with her first publication 'Mr Hare's Big Secret', which the children still enjoy reading. So we were excited to read this new tale, especially as her books are bursting with her stunning animal illustrations.

'Have you Heard?' by Hannah Dale
Have You Heard by Hannah Dale £12.00

I don't want to share too much of the book and spoil it for you - but here's a taster of what a super book it is and how amazing the detail is in Hannah's illustrations, they really are enchanting!

'Have you Heard?' by Hannah Dale

'Have you Heard?' by Hannah Dale

Bert is still animal crazy and he was absolutely beaming from ear to ear the first time we read the book together - he was 'awww-ing' and 'ahhh-ing' at the cute animals, and he especially loved the page full of sleeping foxes...

'Have you Heard?' by Hannah Dale

The story itself is easy to read and fairly short (which is important when I have to read 3-4 bedtime stories per night!!) There's a very simple plot to follow, making the book perfect for younger children, or for first readers to try by themselves.

The plot explores how you shouldn't always believe everything you hear and that, sometimes, gossip can get out of hand! The animals in the story are gossiping about scary fox who they believe is on his way to gobble them up - but that might not be strictly true...! There's rhyming text building and repeating on each spread and it's honestly been a joy to share with my two kiddos.

I think Bert's face says it all really...

What was in our August Degustabox?

Degustabox

A part of this month's Degustabox had a 'Back To School' theme - which was super handy, as the new term (and first day of Bert in full time school) starts on Tuesday! Eeek! My baby boy is all grown up - and here marks the beginning of a brand new chapter for us - actually I'm pretty daunted by it all, I don't feel ready to let him go off without me for five days a week, I feel a bit sad, like he's being stolen away from me...but in my heart of hearts I know he's ready and he'll absolutely love it.

Although Bert will mainly be trying to have school dinners at lunch time - he will occasionally take a packed lunch box, and this months Degustabox was crammed with perfect lunch box delights as well as a few nice bits and bobs for the grown ups to enjoy.

Contents of the August 2017 Degustabox

AUGUST CONTENTS:

Back To School...

Seabrook Crisps £1.00 - Seabrook is the original crinkle cut crisp. The variety pack brings together the three most popular Seabrook flavours - Sea Salted, Sea Salt & Vinegar and Cheese and Onion. Everyone has their favourite Seabrook flavour...What's yours? Ours is definitely Sea Salted, followed by Sea Salt and Vinegar - hubby gets the Cheese and Onion ones and me and the kids hate that flavour. We all love Seabrooks, having bought them many times before, we were pleased to indulge on them at lunch times over the last few weeks, what a treat! I love that they're not greasy, like some other crinkle cut crisps on the market. Super tasty snack!

Bahlsen PiCK UP! Black 'N White £1.69 - PiCK UP! Black 'N White is a delicious white chocolate bar sandwiched between two crisp chocolate flavour biscuits. They are individually wrapped, locking in freshness and perfect for on the go occasions and lunch boxes. We ADORED these biscuits - they're so indulgent and tasty - almost too good for children, haha! We ate these as a morning snack on West Wittering beach over the Bank Holiday weekend, the whole family loved them- definitely something I'd pick up in the supermarket if I saw them again. And a great price too!

Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise £1.69 - Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise is made using 100% free range eggs and sustainably sourced oils to deliver a deliciously creamy taste. An ideal dressing to transform your everyday dinners and summer BBQs, Hellmann's mayonnaise is also the perfect partner to spruce up your sandwiches and salads at lunchtime! We almost never have 'real' mayonnaise (as in full fat) so it was such a treat to enjoy the real deal - a little of what you fancy does you good after all! We used our mayonnaise to make a giant potato salad to feed 10 for Bert's 4th Birthday BBQ. We used fresh dill, basil and mint from the garden, and oodles of mayo over still warm Charlotte potatoes, and it went down a storm.

Jelly Squeeze 2 x £0.69 - JellySqueeze isa fun, squeeze jelly in a pouch, refreshing a re-sealable making it ideal to eat on the go or pop in a packed lunch. Gluten and lactose free, suitable for vegans and vegetarians and schools compliant, JellySqueeze is great for kids of all ages to enjoy. Both my kids adore  jelly, so we're saving these pouches for Bert's first packed lunch boxes in the coming weeks.

Light Bites Popped Chips x 2 £0.99 - Perfect for virtuous snacking! Light Bites popped chips are under 100 calories, gluten free, packed with fibre and protein, veggie friendly, free from artificial colours, preservatives, flavours and low in saturated fat. Popped chips are spud free, msg and gm free too! Liam and I shared both bags of these during the long car journey (4 hours) to the South Coast last weekend - they we're both totally delicious and even better knowing they're full of goodness unlike conventional fried potato crisps. WIN!

Rest of the box:

Maggi® Fusian® Noodles 2 x £1.39 - Sticky Hoisin Duck Noodles are flavoured with rich sweet soy, oriental spice and hints of roasted duck with infused oil and veggies. The Fiery Sweet Chilli Noddles are full of spicy chilli and ginger with onion oil and veggies  - both create a noodles adventure in only four minutes! Hubby ate (both) of these noodle packs for a quick and easy dinner when I was out with friends this week - perfect for no nonsense speed, and he said they were (and I quote) "Surprisingly tasty" - they reminded him of his bachelor days, so a fairly nostalgic eat!

Twisted Halo - Coconut Water, Ginger & Vodka £1.50 - Twisted Halo contains only natural flavours and no added sugar or sweeteners. A subtly sweet coconut water taste is followed by a warming ginger aroma with just a hint of lime. As neither Liam or I are vodka drinkers, we took this away to our long weekend on the South Coast last weekend, and gave it to my cousin who we were staying with, who is a vodka drinker. She loved it! She even took a photo of the label so she could remember what it was called and buy some next time she went shopping!

Tabasco Green Pepper Sauce £1.89 - TABASCO® Green Sauce delivers great tangy flavour. It is made from mild green jalapeño peppers mixed with vinegar and salt. It's a staple flavour for Mexican food and also can be used in anything from seafood to dressings and fruit. A few dashes gives a kick to margaritas and piña-coladas. Liam and I ADORE this spicy sauce - we love lots of heat in our food, and find this the perfect addition to those meals that just need an extra kick. I love this so much I'm considering popping one in my handbag for when I eat out - there's nothing worse than wishing your meal had an extra kick of spice with nothing to hand.

Orangina Limited Edition Summer Bottles 2 x £1.20 - Orangina, with it's unmistakable orange flavour, soft sparkle and real citrus pulp, makes the perfect summer drink. It is both delicious on its own with ice and a slice of orange, or as a mixer in mocktails and cocktails. We took these to the caravan for our little weekend away, and they served as the perfect ice cold straight from the fridge beverage after a long (and very hot!) day on the beach. Orangina always make me chuckle - growing up my Uncle Rob had a girlfriend called Gina, who was very into her fake tan - we all used to call her 'OrangeGina' (not to her face, obviously!) hahahaha

Refreshers Softies £1.00 - Refreshers Softies add a new dimension to your retro confectionery favourites - soft, fruity and chewy, with the same great fizz, they're a delicious twist on the much loved Refreshers sweets. Of course, Bert commandeered these as his own as soon as he saw the bag! Haha! He gets so excited when the Degustabox arrives, hoping that they'll be a sweetie treat hidden in there for him - he's still working his way through the bag but he seems to be enjoying them.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Big Taste Toffee Whole Nut £0.65 - Taste the Big Sensation wherever you are with Cadbury Dairy Milk Big Taste Toffee Whole Nut now available in a convenient on-the-go format! Much like with the sweets, Liam swooped this straight from the box - he does love his chocolate (especially Cadburys!) so he was well happy. I was chuffed that this delicious bar comes in a single portion size - one thing that puts me off purchasing chocolate these days is the huge sizes of the bars - they're too tempting for me - if I buy a big bar I will undoubtably eat it all over the period of a few days, and if I just buy a single portion bar then that's all I can eat - a much healthier option.

Cadbury Curlywurly Squirlies £1.99 - Bitesize chewy caramel pieces covered in Cadbury milk chocolate! A family favourite, now available in a shareable bag! I'm not a massive fan of the Curlywurly - I find them too chewy and they get stuck in my teeth which I find annoying, but Liam and Bert have been enjoying these a lot - grabbing a little handful whenever they want a little sweet treat.

A Wonderful Family Day Out At Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire

Paradise Wildlife Park, Hertfordshire. Topiary bushes.

Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire is just an hours drive from our house - we've seen various leaflets and had a few recommendations from friends that it's a brilliant family day out, and we had been meaning to go with our animal mad little boy for ages, but had never gotten round to it!

On Tuesday we managed to rectify the situation as it was Bert's 4th birthday - and what better way to celebrate than to finally take him to Paradise?

You know when you've been talking to your kids about a day out for weeks, and then the day arrives and you suddenly panic that it's going to be rubbish and they will be disappointed? This was me on Tuesday morning! I have an irrational fear of the unknown, and having never been to PWP before I was suddenly gripped with panic that our expectations were too high and we might be left wanting.

It turns out I needn't have worried as it was the best family day out we could have asked for - Paradise impressed us immensely. We were there from 12pm -6pm and could easily have squashed in a few more hours of fun - so next time (and there will be a next time) we'll get there for 10am instead.

THE ANIMALS

I have to start with the obvious, right? The animals. I've visited many zoos, farms, wildlife parks etc over the years (being a teacher for 7 years meant many school trips!) and I can honestly say that never before have I been so impressed with the variety of animals for you to encounter. Paradise provides such an eclectic mix of creatures - from your classic farm animals: pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, guinea pigs, chinchillas to amazing Wild Cats, reptiles, African animals, monkeys, birds of paradise and so much more.

Not only is there a diverse selection of animals to see, but you can also get so close to them - their enclosures still feel plenty big for them, but they're designed in a way that means the public can get great views and vantage points - especially on the Big Cat Treetops Walk. It blew my mind how close I could get, yet still feel safe.

The pictures should speak for themselves...

The other thing I noted about not only the animal enclosures but also the recreational areas too - was how clean it all was. Nothing looked tired or unloved - and the enclosures were lush with greenery and there was plenty to keep the animals occupied within their enclosures.

Lioness at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire

You know those rare family days out where the kids behave impeccably, all time scales go according to plan, and you happen to time everything just perfectly all day? This was us on Tuesday! The birthday gods were smiling on us that's for sure!

We left on time (this NEVER happens), had a smooth journey with zero traffic, enjoyed an hours mooch around the Animal Park before heading to buy some lunch in the diner, we arrived there at 1pm (peak lunch time) and only had to queue for 5 minutes to get our fresh (hot) food, and we were in and out of the diner in 40 minutes - giving us 4 more hours to enjoy the park! The weather was perfect all day - warm but cloudy, no rain at all - BOOM!

Not only did we time lunch right, we also arrived at The Big Cats section just in time to watch someone doing the 'Feed The White Lions' experience. We couldn't believe our luck! We watched through the fence as the man got to feed one of the stunning white lions - they were literally 2 meters away from us, and I snapped these amazing photos of the impressive beast! Bert couldn't believe what he was seeing, and Liam and I were THRILLED to have seen such an amazing sight.

Lion being fed at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire

I took so many more photos of the animals throughout the day - but I don't want to spoil all the surprises for you, so I won't share them all. Just trust me when I tell you that there's so much to see.

LUNCH TIME/THE FOOD

As I said earlier, we headed to Sam's Safari Diner for lunch - and only had to queue for 5 mins to get our fresh hot and cold foods. Bert opted for a children's lunch box which included sandwich, drink, packet of crisps, piece of fruit and chocolate bar, I went for a double egg and cress sandwich which was delicious - very fresh and bursting full of filling. Liam went all out (he's in full on 'holiday mode' this week) and had the buttermilk chicken burger with cheese, bacon and chips - and said it was piping hot and delicious. Both Liam and I had soft drinks, and Bert's box came with a juice. The whole lot cost us £22, which is pretty good value for the quality of what we ate. Connie ate little tastes of all of our foods, and had her own little baby snacks with her to enjoy too - we don't call her 'Dustbin Baby' for nothing - she's forever finishing all the food we leave, little piglet.

If you don't want to spend extra money on food when you visit Paradise there are an abundance of lovely picnic areas so you can enjoy a homemade lunch.

There's also an incredible cafe hidden in the big cats treetop walk called Tiger Treetops which looks straight into the Tiger enclosure, it's absolutely amazing - so I urge you to head there for a cup of tea and afternoon slice of cake if you need refuelling during the day - you won't regret it!

PLAYTIME

Aside from the animals, Paradise is absolutely packed full of amazing play equipment - honestly, you could spend all day there just working your way around the many adventure playgrounds, slides etc.

From bumpy slides to enclosed snake slide, pirate ship adventure playground to real Fire Engine play vehicle there's something for all ages at Paradise. Play equipment also includes: steam train slide, mini climbing wall, go-karts, digger/construction sight, sand pit, on-safari golf, train ride, trim trail and all your usual swings, climbing frames etc - you're children won't know what to dive into first! Bert was in playground heaven - and nothing was pitched too much above what he could manage physically, so I wasn't beside myself with worry watching him on equipment where I though he was likely to hurt himself at any second (I'm SUCH a worry wart!).

Snake Slide at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire

Dragon Slide at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire

Pirate Ship Adventure Playground at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire

Train slide at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire

Gypsy Caravan at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire

Paradise is divided into two clear sections, making it easy to navigate and plan your day with a semblance of order - in a nutshell, the left side of the main drive houses the animals and the right side the food and play equipment.

LEFT SIDE = Animal Park where the majority of the animals are housed, the ARC (Animal Resource Centre), Safari Golf, Discovery Centre, Birds at Paradise and Gift Shop.

RIGHT SIDE = Food, stage area (for the many shows/activities), woodland railway and Adventure Land (all the play equipment), Jumble Jungle Soft Play, the Paradise Lagoon Paddling Pool and the Marquee and Event area.

We moved between the two areas throughout the day, as necessary, I loved how close everything felt - nothing is a major trek at Paradise, so it's perfect for little toddler legs - Bert didn't ask to go on our shoulders or use the buggy board once, and even Connie walked around on her reins for loads of the day!

We ended our day over in the right side of the park - spending the last hour between Paradise Lagoon Paddling Pool and Jumble Jungle Soft Play - there's nothing like squeezing the last bits of energy out of your kids to ensure a quiet journey home! Ha!

Paddling Pool at Paradise Wildlife Park

Both Bert and Connie LOVED the paddling pool - I drew the short straw and went in with them (leggings rolled up, a slight for sore eyes!) luckily it was a warm day, so the cold paddle and splashing was a welcome cool-down, and no matter how cold, how couldn't be happy at seeing the sheer delight on their childrens faces? Bert was nervous to go down the slide at the paddling pool at first, knowing him well we knew it best not to force the issue and just let him watch the other children enjoy it, and realise for himself that he would in fact enjoy it, and was absolutely capable. After 15 minutes he plucked up the courage, and then that was it, he spent the rest of the time launching himself down the slide and 'squeeeeee'ing at the top of his voice with delight.

Connie is a massive water baby and we had to endure the mother of all tantrums when we got her out - she was not a happy bunny. In fact, so disgruntled was Connie that her splashy time was over that she proceeded to wee all over me while I got her changed. Thanks Con! Good job it was the end of the day and I was wearing a dark outfit...!

Soft Play at Paradise Wildlife Park

The kids quickly forgot their upset at leaving the paddling pool when they set eyes on the soft play! They teared around here for the last half an hour, doing their best impressions of wild cats, before we bundled them in the car and headed home for a fish and chip shop supper at Bert's request.

What a marvellous day!

LITTLE EXTRAS

There are lovely little touches at Paradise that make it an extra special place such as the Sign with Olli cards placed around the animal enclosures teaching children the signs for the different animals. Bert loved learning them and even knew a few already thanks to his love of Justin Fletcher and Something Special.

THE CUTE PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES (A BLOGGER'S HEAVEN!)

Paradise is bursting with the cutest photo opportunities too - I was in bloggers heaven! These little snaps should give you a small taste of the sorts of cute family shots you can get when you visit...

THE GROUNDS

Last, and by no means least - I was really blown away by how beautifully well looked after the grounds at Paradise are - from lush flower beds and hanging baskets, to a stunning woodland; the whole park was clean, tidy and inviting.

HAPPY FAMILY TIMES

Best of all was sharing this happy day with my gang and watching the sheer joy and delight on their faces all day long. These pictures absolutely speak for themselves, you can see that they're oozing with happiness...

Connie at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire
Connie woke up from a little nap to see her favourite the "BIRDS" (one of her clear words) - her nursery is decorated with Quentin Blake 'Cockatoos' wallpaper, and she has a big wooden flying parrot mobile hanging from her ceiling, which she says goodnight to each night before bed - 'BIRD' was one of her very early words, and she was delighted when she woke up to see them all.

PRICES & VALUE FOR MONEY

Children under 2 go free!

Online prices (including 10% discount):

£50.49 for 2 adults 1 child
£65.34 for 2 adults 2 children

Being parents to an animal mad little boy - we've visited our fair share of zoos, farms, wildlife parks and aquariums etc - I can honestly say that so far, out of all the places we have visited, that Paradise has provided us with the most value for money. Hands down.

We spent money there on buying lunch in Safari Sam's Diner and an ice cream from the kiosk, but you could easily have taken a picnic and snacks and saved yourself the extra expense.

We also let Bert spend £20 of his birthday money in the gift shop as it was his actual birthday - but there's such a huge variety of small items available in the shop, you could easily get away with just spending a few pounds to bring a little souvenir away with you. I particularly liked the 12 small animal figures for £3.00 deal - what a bargain!

Without the added extras of buying lunch, ice cream and gifts in the gift shop - the only other cost to us was £3 for all of us to go on the train ride, which was adorable, and £1 for Bert to have a go on the squirting water pistol game. I mean, it's not going to break the bank, right?

We could easily have amused ourselves there all day long from when the park opens at 9:30am and stayed until 6pm - without being tempted by the extras that would have cost us a total of £50.49p - 8.5 hours of uninterrupted family fun for £50 - I don't think that's bad at all.

We'll most definitely head back there again soon, this time bringing other members of the extended family, who are now all desperate to visit after hearing us wax lyrical about it.

Have you been to Paradise Wildlife Park yet?
