8 Things You Need for A Vintage Wedding...

I love an excuse to look back at my wedding photos, and as wedding season is now upon us I thought I'd have a think about what makes a great vintage wedding...

The vintage wedding is no longer a thing of the past. Since Liam and I got married back in 2012 the theme has been gaining in popularity, and more and more people are opting for this kind of "do" for their special day. Maybe it's a style thing? Maybe it's people harking back to the "make do and mend' culture of the past, or perhaps people are realising that vintage is better for the environment: old things always come back into fashion eventually, so that could just be the case here! Regardless of the reasons people have for loving this trend, there are a few things you need to get it right.

Here are 8 things you need for a great vintage wedding:

Vintage Decor

To set the scene at a vintage wedding, you’re going to need vintage decor. It doesn’t need to be real vintage of course, unless you can source some that you can use. You can make your own decor that simply looks vintage, using things like corks and old wine bottles. There are so many tutorials online that you’ll be spoiled for choice, just make sure you leave plenty of time!

These vintage signs were found a few weeks before the wedding in my uncles barn (where we held our wedding reception) they added perfect vintage charm to our venue.

My collection of vintage teapots were used by our waitresses to serve tea to all the guests at the afternoon tea inspired reception

I used old corks to make the name place settings for each guest at our reception (even myself!)

A Vintage Style Dress

It’s up to you whether you’d like to find a real vintage wedding dress or a style that fits in with the theme. Depending on the quality of the dress and the year, you may spend a lot of money on real vintage - there are some brilliant lower cost options as well, it's worth keeping your ear to the ground, and looking in relatives lofts as well as in charity shops too: you never know where a vintage beauty might turn up! It all depends on your budget and just remember you’ll need the rest of the outfits to fit in with the theme too!

For our wedding I chose an off-the-rack dress from a Surrey-based bridal boutique by Ellis Bridals. I chose a champagne coloured dress, with lots of vintage-inspired detailing such as beading, lace and floral corsage.

My wedding dress - by Ellis Bridals

So pretty - my vintage inspired wedding dress!

Stunning detail and a beautiful champagne shade!

A Vintage Inspired Hairstyle or Hair Accessories

There are so many different hairstyles you can go for on your wedding day, but you need a hairstyle to match your beautiful vintage dress. Something wavy would look wonderful, either up or down; whatever you prefer. The victory roll is a classic vintage hairstyle that you could also try, but it’s best to get a pro to perfect it for you. I opted for my usual straight hair (as my hair is impossible to curl) but with a vintage inspired tiara and veil to accessorise.

Both looking slightly rounder here - but still...what a magical day it was!

Vintage Invites

The invites set the scene for your wedding before anybody has even arrived. Vintage wedding invites will let everybody know what to expect in a subtle way. You don’t need to give too much away. We had ours designed by my best friend Carmi, who is an illustrator - we wanted everyone to know they'd be coming to an afternoon tea themed wedding and so chose cakes, teacups and cake stands with a classic and simple colour scheme. We had two types of invite made: one for all day guests, and one for evening guests.

Our stunning invites: the evening guest one.

Freshly Picked Flowers

Freshly picked flowers look far more authentic than store bought flowers. You can do this yourself if you have somewhere you can legitimately take flowers from, or you can explain your needs to a florist. With hindsight, I wish I'd chosen country-style wild flowers and peonies rather than gerberas for our day, as the gerberas are quite modern looking: I simply picked them because they are one of my favourite flowers. There really are no rules though - pick what you love!

Our table flower arrangements matched our bridesmaids dresses - a gorgeous bright shade of pink. Using stunning Gerberas (one of my favourite flowers).

Our table decorations!

Quirky Elements

Vintage weddings are so much fun because they usually incorporate quirky elements. Things like old suitcases and crates can be used as displays, for example. You can use just about anything in a creative way!

I had so much fun coming up with quirky extras to add to our wedding day, and I think perhaps the quirkiest of all the elements was our incredible wedding cake, made by a family friend, and inspired by Pinterest!

Our super-quirky wedding cake - inspired by Cath Kinston & a cake I saw on Pinterest!

Vintage inspired bird cages with fairy lights hung from the barn ceiling...

My great aunts wedding photo hung behind the top table inside the barn to add to the vintage charm, and to include my wonderful late grandfather (in the picture) in our special day.

chalk board order of the day (this still hangs in my dining room to this day!)

Vintage style sweet shop bags with a selection of traditional sweets inside for wedding favours, sealed with a Cath Kidston sticker.

To add to the quirky charm of our day the children all had pony rides in my auntie's sand school next to the barn - it helped to keep them occupied on what can be quite a long day for children!

Appropriate Music

The music should suit the style of wedding you’ve chosen. Playing some old songs mixed in with some modern songs should please everybody. Modern artists like Adele really suit this style of wedding.

We chose 'Unforgettable' by Nat King Cole for when I walked down the aisle, followed by 'I Swear' by Kenny Rodgers for the end of the ceremony. We had an acoustic version of 'Rule the World' by Take That sung for us for our first dance by my best friend Carmi and my brother Reg (who accompanied her on his guitar) - something live and personal adds so much charm to your special day.

The Right Venue

The right venue is essential for a vintage wedding. You don’t want to hold your vintage wedding in an ultra modern room; it just wouldn’t work. Make sure you select the venue carefully!

We were very lucky that my Aunt and Uncle offered us the use of their old barn (on the farm that they live on in Surrey) free of charge, wow - what a perfect location it was!

The stunning venue for our wedding day: my Aunt and Uncles' farm in Surrey.

The stunning barn where we held our wedding reception: owned by my Aunt and Uncle on their old farm in Surrey - some happy memories were made in that barn!

If you have these 8 things, you’ll definitely have the most wonderful vintage wedding.

Trust me when I say that it is totally worth putting in lots of effort and planning behind the scenes in advance, all those special little personal touches will make the day super-magical, and will provide you with a lifetime of happy memories and photographs to look back on and remember.

Make sure you enjoy every single moment of the day and don’t worry about anything...if you've put in the hard work and planning then your day will be perfect!

#ItsInTheBagBaby - What I Can't Leave Home Without...

#ItsInTheBagBaby

It never ceases to amaze me just how much "stuff" children need. I used to be able to leave the house with a small handbag, and be done with it. These days I pretty much can't leave without a large holdall full to bursting with Bert's 'kit'.

Granted, as Bert's gotten older we can nip out for an hour without much at all, but any more than that and I tend to leave the house with the kitchen sink in tow.

I'm a 'like to be prepared' kind of Mumma - so I tend to plan ahead where I can to ensure I've got all my bases covered. That doesn't mean I haven't been caught short on occasion forgetting to pack a snack, or bum cream, or heaven forbid, that tiny little toy he wants now were out but hasn't looked at in 2 months! Ha....toddlers!

At 'mummy of a toddler' stage (Bert is now 21 months), this is my Baby Bag Essentials list:

For Bert:

-Changing mat (handmade by moi using Quentin Blakes Cockatoos fabric & red/white gingham oilcloth)
-Nappies (size 5)
-Wipes
-Nappy Sacks
-Sudocream
-Factor 50 Suncream
-Reins
-A change of clothes (usually joggers, vest, tshirt, socks, bib)
-Antibacterial hand gel
-Antibacterial wipes
-SNACKS! (Usually raisins, an apple and a small packet of mini biscuits)
-A couple of small toys (usually dinosaurs!)
-A big drink of water in his dinosaur drinks bottle

For Mumma:

-Purse
-Keys
-Phone
-Sunglasses
-Mirror (a digestive biscuit pocket mirror none the less!)
-Lip balm
-Handcream
-Glasses wipes (I am FOREVER needing to wipe my glasses, sticky toddler fingers + specs don't mix too well!)
-My Kindle for those rare moments when Bert's fallen asleep in the buggy or is playing quietly while out and I can get a cheeky 5 minute read in.

The Essentials.

Always the last thing to be packed is Bert's dinosaur cup drink of water, as it can be a bit prone to the odd spill (so buried in the bottom of the bag is never a good idea unless I want the whole contents of the bag to be soggy!) Plus, he wants it then doesn't want it around a gazillion times while we're out, so right at the top is where it stays.

It's a hard life being out and about as a busy toddler: it's a good job Mum has all my bases covered!

I sometimes I pack my own personal things into a handbag rather than putting them in Bert's 'baby bag'. When I'm short on space in the buggy I will combine the two, and just pack my things into the little zip pouch in Bert's bag, whatever works that day really!

Have I missed any essentials that you like to carry?

I'd love to know what's in your baby bag...

'Clean & Green' from Parragon Books - Melon & Coconut Mojito Virgin Smootie *Recipe*

Today I'm bringing you some summery inspiration to brighten this rather yucky day - one minute its raining, and the next it's sunny - make up your mind will you please weather? I'm rather enjoying bare legs, flip flops and summer dresses, so if you could make the sunshine stick around that would be great, thanks.

Clean & Green, which is currently available at The Works for just £3!!

Now then, I'll be honest, when Parragon sent me their latest book for review I wasn't overly excited - 'Clean & Green' is a book full of smoothie, juice and soup recipes - all with one thing in common - they're all green (meaning stuffed full of nutrient packed greens). Although I'm reasonably health-conscious, I've never actually gotten into juicing and smoothie making, it really isn't for me. A drink for me will never replace a good meal, I will always feel a bit cheated when I've had to drink my meal. For me, the only way to eat a soup is as a starter, with a large chunk of bread, so you can understand my reservations...

However, in true, 'I better give it a whirl' style, I had a read through the recipes and one in particular caught my eye - the melon & coconut mojito smoothie sounded interesting: I LOVE melon and coconut, they are two of my most favourite summery flavours, and I figured I could make this smoothie as a healthy extra to enjoy alongside my lunch on a particularly hot day last week.

I will say this now - you will not enjoy this smoothie if you don't like things with a little texture - despite the name, this drink isn't smooth - the real coconut flesh in the drink means that you do get a slightly lumpy texture - you could get around this by using coconut milk instead of real coconut pieces, I may well try that next time, although I didn't mind the texture too much.

MELON & COCONUT MOJITO VIRGIN SMOOTHIE

Ingredients

20g spinach
50g coconut flesh OR 100ml coconut milk
200ml chilled water
100g melon
1 tbsp chopped fresh mint
juice of ½ lime
50g mango, peeled and chopped
crushed ice

Method

I used my super-strong KitchenAid Food Processor to blend this smoothie - but you can use a smoothie maker or NutriBullet too.

1. Put the spinach, coconut, water into your blender and blend until smooth.
2. Add the melon, mint, lime juice and mango, and blend until smooth and creamy. Pour over crushed ice and serve immediately garnished with fresh mint, mango slices, coconut slices...be creative!

See, it's easy peasy right?

The book says it serves 1, but I managed to get two fairly decent sized glasses out of it.

The smoothie is around 133 calories per portion if you make it serve two.

A rather pretty glass of a super-summery smoothie!

About the Book

The book is arranged into five sections...

1. INTRODUCTION - an overview of why green is good for your health, some tips and tricks for juicing success and a list of what equipment to use in order to juice, make smoothies and soups.

2. GREEN TO CLEANSE - recipes such as a melon, pear and ginger spritzer, aloe refresher and a parsley purifier!

3. GREEN TO GLOW - recipes such as a kiwi quencher, sprout tonic, mango & lime bone builder, and rocket-fuel soup!

4. GREEN TO DETOX - recipes such as a lettuce elixir, grape & lychee reviver, green tea punch and mint rejuvenator!

5. GREEN TO SOOTHE - recipes such as a cucumber soother, pineapple pump, minted melon squash, and a broccoli booster!

This is quite the collection - a kind of bible of green if you will. This book has enough super-healthy clean and green smoothie, juice and soup recipes to keep you happy for life! And for just £3 that's a bit of a bargain if you ask me!

Whether you're already embracing juicing and smoothies, or whether you'd just like to give them a whirl - or get hidden goodness into your little ones in the form of a yummy 'special green milkshake'....this book would be a great buy!

Happy juicing healthy people!

Homemade Bourbon Biscuits Recipe

easy homemade Bourbon biscuit recipe from Mrs Bishop

The humble shop-bought Bourbon - you can't beat it, right? WRONG!

Everybody loves a good Bourbon biscuit right? The perfect balance between sweet and salty, soft and crunchy, and just right for dunking...this nostalgic bit of biscuity goodness is one of my favourites for sure.

Although a time-consuming task, making them at home is totally worth the effort as they FAR exceed the ones you can buy in the shop - my homemade Bourbons are their bigger, better, beefier cousins, so to speak.

This recipe is something that I've adapted over time - originally using this recipe by Miranda Gore-Browne (of Bake Off fame) I've adapted it over time by trying our varying different flour combinations, different cocoa powders and other additions, until I was finally happy and confident with this final recipe.

I'm going to share it with you today so you can make them yourself at home.

You're welcome. :-)

HOMEMADE BOURBONS

easy homemade Bourbon biscuit recipe from Mrs Bishop

INGREDIENTS

For the biscuits

110g light soft brown sugar
110g salted butter
75g plain flour
35g wholemeal flour (I use strong)
25g good cocoa powder (I use Green & Blacks)
20g raw cacoa powder
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
a big pinch of salt
40g golden syrup

For the buttercream filling

200g icing sugar
100g salted butter
15g cocoa powder
10g raw cacoa powder
2 tbsp espresso coffee
1 tsp vanilla extract or bean paste

The mix of flours adds to the texture and bite of the biscuit, and the use of some raw cacao powder gives a deeper chocolatey hit than just cocoa powder alone. The golden syrup is a vital addition to the biscuit dough both for sweetness and texture (thanks to The Biscuiteer ladies for teaching me that trick!)

Adding coffee to the buttercream might seem like an odd addition, but its a tip I learnt from the master that is Ina Garten (The Barefoot Contessa) - by adding a hit of strong coffee to a chocolate flavoured bake it really brings out the chocolatey flavour - a real flavour enhancer and yet it doesn't taste of strong coffee (I promise).

METHOD

1. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy - add the golden syrup and mix in until combined.
2. Sieve all the dry ingredients together and add to the sugar/butter/syrup mix until a dough forms.
3. Weigh your dough ball and divide into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a sausage shape and then roll out between sheets of cling film into as rectangular a piece as you can manage about 4mm thick.
4. Put all 4 rectangles between cling film into the fridge to go hard (making the cutting out a much easier process)
5. Preheat your oven to 170℃ and line two baking trays with baking parchment.
6. Take your dough out of the fridge one sheet at a time and use a Bourbon cookie stamper to stamp the design into your dough. You should be able to get 40 biscuits in total (making 20 final sandwiches) out of all of the dough - so 10 biscuits per quarter. 7.Once you've stamped the design into the dough use a pizza wheel or knife to cut out each rectangle, and place it on a lined baking tray using a palette knife (space about 2cm apart as they do spread in the oven).
8. Bake for 10 minutes exactly, then remove from the oven - while still hot sprinkle over some granulated sugar and press in lightly with your fingertips or the back of a spoon (be careful they're hot).
9. Leave the biscuits to cool on the tray for 15 minutes (they will still be soft, but will harden as they cool, so don't try to move them). After 15 minutes carefully using a palette knife, move to a wire rack to cool completely.
9. Keep cutting and baking until you have 40 biscuits and leave to cool completely while you make your buttercream.
10. Using a stand mixer (or wooden spoon if you're hardcore!) beat the icing sugar and butter together until light and fluffy in texture. Add the cocoa powder, raw cacao, vanilla and espresso and beat until combined and super chocolatey.
11. Use a palette knife to spread on a generous amount of buttercream to the underside of one biscuit, then carefully sandwich it together with another biscuit trying to match up the sizes as best you can - if you've weighed your dough and rolled out accurately they should all be a similar (ish) size.
12. Place in an airtight container in the fridge for the buttercream to harden slightly, and enjoy either straight from the fridge with a slight chill, or leave out at room temperature for five minutes or so if you prefer a room temperature biscuit.
13. Make a cuppa and dunk away to your hearts content!

Each biscuit contains approximately 150 calories, and is worth every single one, I promise!

Keeping Bert Entertained in the Garden

My beautiful Bert is now 21 months old - HOW is he a fully grown, extra large TODDLER already? Where does the time go?

He is so much fun to be around, a ridiculously funny boy- this little dude has so much character it hurts! One of his favourite ways to spend an hour is running around like a madman in the garden - playing in his sandpit, climbing on his slide, or hiding in the very old playhouse at the bottom of the garden.

At the moment though, we are waiting for a new lawn to grow (hubby had to dig up and grass seed the whole thing)...so at the moment the garden is out of bounds....boo!! Daily trips to the park will have to suffice for now, but we can't wait to have our stomping ground back, hopefully in a couple of weeks - just as the weather brightens, we'll be back in the garden, watching the birds and digging for worms! Wahoo!

I've been wanting to share some more recent photos and clips of The Bertster with my lovely readers, and thought this post would be the perfect opportunity...

So here is a little poem and some pictures all about the B-Man and his garden antics!

Bert Is In The Garden

I just love my garden
It's my favourite place to run
It's only small, but it's perfect - full of so much fun!

First, I have my sandpit, which my auntie gave to me
It's shaped like a turtle and as green as can be.
It's full up with toys...
Buckets, and spades and sieves
In the centre of my garden is where it lives

Next I have a slide of blue,
My favourite thing to climb,
I jump up the slide not stairs,
I'm a daring little lad -
Sometimes I shoot fast off the end,
And mummy looks like she's mad

Of course, she's only worried,
She doesn't want me to get hurt
Whenever I graze my knee
She cuddles me and says
"It's alright Bert"

I try to be brave but
My lip sometimes wobbles...
Especially when I tripped over in my garden
And then I had to hobble!

I also like the trampoline,
To bounce the days away...
I can spring up to the moon,
That's what my Daddy says!

And then, there's The Den...it's a bit old and rusty...
When I play inside it smells a bit musty!
But my clever Dad and Uncle Charlie gave it a lick of paint
Mum made me a little sign and some starry bunting
It really is such a fun thing

Mum hung bright yellow paper pom poms from the ceiling
And put my rocking horse inside, as she knew that I was feeling
Lonely in my play house, without a friend to play with
And now that horsey lives inside
It's her I spend the day with.

We chat and we play peek-a-boo,
Bursting through the window
We close the door, shut out the world, and I tell Horsey lots of things
She doesn't say a thing though!
She's quiet is my Horsey friend,
But I don't mind a bit
Whether quiet or really loud my Horsey is a hit!

I also like to chase around my garden, stomping on the lawn
I love to kick a ball around - I could stay out there till' dawn!
I want to get a goal for my birthday when I'm two...
I think someone will get it, but I just don't know who?
Maybe it will be my Nanny Ruth, as she is mad on sport
She wants me to win a gold medal when I'm big,
Oh, what a thought!

Apart from sand and slides and houses I love to dig for treasure,
I watch the birds fly all around,
The garden is full of pleasure!

I love it when we eat our dinner al fresco...
A picnic or a BBQ, from Aldi or from Tesco.
Mummy puts a blanket down, and we all sit down together
Special eating family time
It is my best time ever

I also love to swing - high into the trees
When my mum pushes me in the breeze
I go 'wheeeee' and I giggle and cheer
When I was smaller I giggled with fear

But now I am a toddler I can swing without a fright
I don't even hold on with all my might
I can multitask when swinging
I can even gobble cake
I like to see how much mess one boy can make!

Our garden is out of bounds for a little while...
I can't play out there until the new grass has sprouted
At least, that's what Daddy shouted,
When I accidentally ran out there and trampled on the dirt
"You're not meant to be out there Bert!"
Oh sorry Daddy, I forgot!
I just can't wait until it's hot
Again and I can play
Out on the fresh grass all the day

But for now the park will have to suffice
Playing with my friends there is rather nice...
But I'd much rather be in my garden with my toys
I don't even mind sharing with other girls and boys
There's plenty to do and there's plenty to see
There in my garden with my pear tree, and me.

Do your little ones love to play in the garden?

What do you have outside to keep them occupied?

The PERFECT Girls Night In with Choc-On-Choc

Bath-based luxury chocolatiers Choc on Choc recently sent me over their amazing Chocolate Biscuit Collection to try out. The collection is made entirely from the finest Belgian white and milk chocolate and each chocolate is shaped like Britain’s most iconic biscuits!

Anyone who knows me well knows that:

a) I am OBSESSED with biscuits and

b) Chocolate is important to me. I might even love it about as much as I love my cat.

Never one to turn down free chocolate - especially when they're shaped like my favourite biscuits - I set to work on the hard task of tasting each and every one! I didn't think I could quite manage them all on my own, so I roped in my husband and great friend Jade to help me (poor things, not!)

On Saturday night, my lovely friend Jade (who blogs over at Late for Reality) joined me for a well earned Girls Night In Sleepover.

I was armed with my 'everything you need for a good sleepover' arsenal.

This included:
-a yummy homemade dinner
-the fabulous chocolates from Choc-on-Choc
-a big jug of Mojito cocktail
-a bowl of posh crisps, and
-a girlie DVD

Awesomeness.

A girls night in selfie...had to be done!

We chatted and scoffed our way through all the yummy treats (and barely noticed the DVD playing in the background) it was a perfect way to recharge the batteries, and was great to catch up with lovely Jade before we head off to the BritMums Live conference in London together in a few weeks time.

Okay, back to the chocolates...

Priced at just £12.00 for the box, they would make the best gift - if you like to buy unique  gifts for your loved ones, then undoubtedly these would go down a real treat...not just your standard 'box of chocs' this fun twist on a classic not only look incredible but taste dreamy!

They come beautifully packaged in a lovely box, and so would make the ideal gift for any biscuit/chocolate/cool stuff lovers! (i.e everyone!)

As the mojitos chilled in the fridge I quickly snapped some pics of the chocolatey delights to share with you..

They've been sat in my kitchen for over a week and it took all of my self control not to dive in and devour them!

The collection is inspired by the quintessential British tradition of afternoon tea and has been produced using the brand’s patented chocolate layering technique. This unique method has created beautiful chocolates that look identical to real biscuits - in the set you get two pink wafers, one Bourbon, one Custard Cream, one Digestive, one Jammy Dodger and a Party Ring biscuit! All your favourites in solid Belgian chocolate! PERFECTO!

Chocolate heaven: and don't you just LOVE my wooden Bourbon biscuit board - this is still number one in my 'best present ever' list (thanks Liz!)

An iconic British brand themselves, Choc on Choc produce every single chocolate by hand at their ‘Chocolate House’ in Rode, a small village near Bath in the South West of England.

The brand takes its name from the patented production method invented by its founders – Flo Broughton and her father Kerr Dunlop – which decadently layers chocolate on top of chocolate.

You genuinely cannot fault their stunningly intricate chocolates, and they don't disappoint on the flavour front other - rich, silky, smooth and creamy - the slowly melting Belgian chocolate is truly delicious. If you can bare to bite into them and not just stare at how cool and beautiful they are, that is.

Jade and I halved each chocolate so as to get a taste of them all - the Jammy Dodger has the addition of a little red food colouring to give the chocolate its jammy-looking centre - how cool does it look?

The white chocolate was my favourite (Oh how I love white chocolate - I think it reminds me of the Milky Bar treats of my childhood) but each and every chocolate was really great, and before we knew it Jade and I had polished off the whole box (we did save one for Liam!). Teamed with our mojitos they were the perfect addition to our girls night in.

Mojitos + Choc-on-Choc = AWESOME NIGHT IN

These chocolates would make an awesome gift for Father's Day if you're Dad is rather partial to chocolate, biscuits or both! :-) You can thank me later for introducing these to your life .... you're welcome!
